Tórsvøllur Master Plan

Client: Tórshavnar Kommuna
Location: Tórshavn, Islas Feroe (Faroe Islands)
Size: 115.000 m2

Fenwick Iribarren Architects has recently been commissioned by Tórshavn Town Hall to develop a Master Plan for the Tórsvøllur National Football Stadium and Gundadalur Sports Village in the Faroe Islands.

The Master Plan design has two objectives, the first is to re-develop and improve the existing sports facilities in the area, and the second is to refurbish and expand the existing Stadium to create a design of the highest quality, which fulfils UEFA requirements, in the hope of hosting international matches in the future.

The Sports Village proposal looks at creating a new access plaza to the Stadium, additional public facilities and services, improved circulation as well as general improvement of landscaped public areas.

The refurbishment proposal for Tórsvøllur Stadium is to be carried out in different phases from the new flood-lighting, new roof covering of all stands, new services and commercial areas and a new multifunctional building.

As a distinctive element within their design, Fenwick Iribarren have proposed a unique and novel geometric solution for the new floodlighting in response to the difficult challenge typical in any existing stadium – lack of physical space.
