Fenwick Iribarren Architects was invited to participate in the competition for the renovation of the Benito Villamarín Stadium (Real Betis). The club’s primary goals included constructing a new main tier, specific improvements to the North Goal, South Goal, and end tiers, creating a new roof, transforming the commercial model and spectator circulations, and enhancing the fan experience by elevating comfort levels and creating a unique experience.

Fenwick Iribarren Architects completely rethought the relationship between the stadium facades and their immediate urban environment to foster a sense of proximity, ease of access, clarity, spacious circulation, and comfort in its interior areas.
Thus, a series of needs were established both at the urban and club level to guide the project design.
On the urban level, the club needed a more welcoming stadium with 360º circulation and tertiary facilities. The aim was to reduce the number of access points to the stadium, improve its accessibility, and, of course, create a new iconic image, a new landmark in the city.
For the club, the goal was to create a 365 days a year active sustainable stadium, with multifunctional spaces offering leisure and experiences to attract the public. A concept called Forever Green.
STADIUMS ARE TEAMS AND FANS TEMPLES. OUR GOAL WAS TO MAKE THEM FEEL PROUD AND CONNECTED TO THE COLOURS, SHIELD, AND ANTHEM OF THEIR CLUB WITH OUR DESIGN.
Therefore, the stadium was created for Real Betis, with the club’s shield geometrically represented on the facade, its colours displayed, and an iconic stadium designed exclusively for the club in its city.
TO IMPROVE ACCESSIBILITY AND CIRCULATION WITHIN THE STADIUM, A PODIUM WAS CREATED AS THE STADIUM’S BASEMENT, SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVING CIRCULATION AND ACCESS. ONE OF THE PODIUM FUNCTIONS WAS TO CREATE A LARGE, ELEVATED, AND OPEN PLAZA WITH CONTROLLED ACCESS.
Two large staircases provide entry with two extensive lines of turnstiles, ensuring the proper organisation and controlled access for a large number of spectators in an open and comfortable environment.
The lower stand and the first tier access are via the podium (including the entire new main stand).
After passing through the turnstiles, the current circulation surface area of the lower stand is quadrupled with a scheme that allows 360º circulation around the building.
